Group Visits
GROUP VISITS
Thank you for your interest in bringing your group to the Urban Civil Rights Museum in Harlem! K-12 schools, camp groups, colleges and universities, community organizations, and adult groups are welcomed for guided tours. Guided tours encourage learners to explore the museum’s exhibitions, which focus on the long and ongoing struggle for justice in Northern urban environments through dialogue, reflection, and active participation.
K-12 School Groups
School, after school, and camp group visits are offered at 10am, 1pm, and 3pm Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and are designed to provide an engaging experience for students and educators.
Visits begin with a one-hour, inquiry-based gallery tour led by Museum Educators. Each school group is divided into two smaller groups to ensure a more personalized and interactive experience in the galleries. Schools have the option to enhance their visit by adding a 1-hour workshop, where students deepen their understanding of the tour’s themes through hands-on artmaking and collaborative learning.
For all school visits, one chaperone is required for every 10 students. Each additional chaperone is $10. Booking requests must be made at least 4 weeks before desired visit date.

We believe every visit should feel relevant, meaningful, and connected to what participants are learning and experiencing in their classrooms and communities.
When booking a K-12 visit, you may select one of the Museum's six guiding themes: Freedom, Justice, Migration, Identity, Resistance, Civic Power.
These themes serve as lenses through which students explore the Museum's content, helping them make connections across historical events, personal experiences, and contemporary issues. By organizing tours around big ideas rather than isolated facts, students are encouraged to think critically, identify patterns, consider multiple perspectives, and connect history to their own lives.
After a booking is confirmed, a Museum Educator will reach out to learn more about the class, curriculum, learning objectives, and student interests. Using this information, our educators will tailor the guided tour to support the group's goals through the selected thematic lens.
All Museum tours are inquiry-based and dialogue-driven. Rather than relying solely on lectures, Museum Educators invite students to ask questions, share observations, analyze historical evidence, and engage in meaningful discussion with one another. This approach encourages active participation, deeper learning, and personal connections to the stories and ideas explored throughout the Museum.
Our goal is to create experiences that are engaging, thought-provoking, and relevant in order to help students see themselves as participants in the ongoing story of civil rights, civic engagement, and social change.
Self-guided visits are available for Non-School Groups only.
All groups that include K-12 students, including schools, camps, after-school programs, and youth organizations, participate in guided experiences led by Museum Educators. Guided visits are designed to support age-appropriate learning, engagement, and discussion.
