Learn

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF HARLEM AND BEYOND

Education is at the heart of our work and values. We believe learning happens through dialogue, reflection, and active participation. We seek to create opportunities for visitors of all ages to connect with each other and to history and the world around them. Through guided tours, workshops, professional development, and engaging programming, we invite learners to explore, learn, reflect, and take part in conversations that continue to shape Northern urban communities today.

For K-12 School Groups

What we offer

The Urban Civil Rights Museum in Harlem welcomes K-12 schools, after-school programs, and camp groups for guided tours led by Museum Educators. Guided tours encourage learners to explore the Museum’s exhibitions, which focus on the long and ongoing struggle for justice in Northern urban environments through dialogue, reflection, and active participation.

K-12 School Groups includes schools, after-school programs, youth groups, and camp groups. School groups may choose between a 1-hour guided tour or a 2-hour experience that combines a guided tour with a hands-on workshop. Visits are tailored by grade level and grounded in inquiry-based learning, primary sources, and themes of Freedom, Justice, Migration, Identity, Resistance, and Civic Power.

K-12 School Group visits are available Wednesdays through Fridays between 10am and 4pm and must be reserved in advance.

All K-12 School Groups must submit an interest form through the Booking page.

For Non-School Groups

What we offer

The Urban Civil Rights Museum in Harlem welcomes colleges and universities, community organizations, and adult groups for guided tours led by Museum Educators, as well as self-guided visits for non-school groups seeking a more independent experience. Guided tours encourage learners to explore the Museum’s exhibitions, which focus on the long and ongoing struggle for justice in Northern urban environments through dialogue, reflection, and active participation.

Non-school Groups include groups who visit the Museum and are not part of a classroom group, school, or university. These groups include and are not limited to tourist groups, community and social organizations, senior centers, clubs, and family groups. Groups may choose from a menu of 40-minute guided tours, including a Museum overview, the inaugural exhibition, or explorations of specific historical periods that illuminate the ongoing struggle for Civil Rights and social justice.

Non-school group visits are available Wednesdays through Saturdays between 10am and 4pm and Sundays between 12pm and 4pm, and must be reserved in advance.

Groups may also opt for a self-guided visit, allowing participants to explore the Museum at their own pace and engage with the exhibitions independently.

All guided and self-guided groups must submit an interest form through the Booking page.

For Families

What we offer

The Urban Civil Rights Museum welcomes families to explore history together through engaging, intergenerational experiences that encourage curiosity, conversation, and connection. Our Storytime on the Stoop program features readings by authors that introduce families to the stories, themes, and histories reflected in the exhibitions. Following each story, families will be invited to participate in a hands-on activity that invites reflection and conversation.
